| The History of Three Rivers Optical, by Bill Seibert, founder and President of Three Rivers Optical |
|
Since its beginning in 1969, Three Rivers Optical has been, first and foremost, a family business. That means the long-term success of the company is directly the result of the hard work, the unshakable loyalty, and the spirit of adventure shared by my wife Madeline and my three children. The very first Three Rivers Optical manufacturing complex was a 250 square foot store room in McKees Rocks. We started out grinding only wholesale uncut glass lenses. Which meant our customers had to have their own edging and finishing equipment. Obviously this was not consistant with my vision of a full-service optical lab. We began manufacturing uncut plastic lenses and quickly grew to 700 square feet and then to 7,000. In 1979, we added our own finishing equipment giving us the capability to edge and finish our own ground lenses. Next came polycarbonate lens equipment and our first coating line. From there, it was a natural progression to Transitions light-sensitive cosmetic lenses and eventually to the full gamut of progressive lens products, frames, cases, and sundries. Finally, we made huge commitments to the optical coatings business with state-of-the-art equipment from Zeiss and SOLA. We established three sales territories: Western Pennsylvania and Western New York, West Virginia and Ohio, and Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. Our salespeople became a vital link to ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians providing detailed product information, technical and customer service training for professionals’ staff members, and even comprehensive seminars which satisfied the ABO (American Board of Opticians) requirements for on-going professional and staff qualification and development courses. In other words, with a lot of hard work, excellent, dedicated employees, and the strength of family, Three Rivers Optical became the full-service laboratory I had dreamed of. Today, we occupy a 30,000 square foot, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in suburban Pittsburgh. And there’s 25,000 additional square feet plumbed and wired and ready for expansion in the near future. The company is a recognized leader in the industry and has a national scope with accounts from Maine to California. We’ve been selected as the Transitions Lab of the Year and honored by the Optical Lab Association as one of the top 25 labs in the country. We have the 70 best employees in the industry. Every member of our customer service staff has passed all 80 hours of ABO training for certified opticians. And, our professional development specialists produce major seminars for hundreds of practitioners promoting and expanding our expertise in the marketplace.
